McAfee

Yesterday I was looking at the Gary Will K-W stock quotes page and noticed that McAfee was added to the list. I remember McAfee from back in the day, when my PC-using friends would argue about what was the most kick-ass virus checker out there. Or something. Oh, I knew they're still around, but virus software is really more of a commodity thing nowadays. Back then it had more religion.

Also, I never figured out if you're supposed to pronounce it MAH-cafee or mc-AF-ee.

So yeah, I thought it was neat that there's a new software company in town. I poked around websites to find out what they're doing. All I've discovered, though, is they have job postings for developers and QA people on kw.jobs. No details.

It was a bit of a coincidence, then, that when I checked my hotmail account last night to get a free trial serial number for REALbasic that I discovered a friend and former cow-orker had emailed me from a mcafee.com address. Because I thought he worked at OpenText. Not anymore, it seems.

He's writing to tell me how McAfee is looking for developers. Which is nice of him. Of course, he gets a referral bonus if I get hired, which is de rigeur for this sort of thing, so I don't mind. I don't think I'll take him up on it, though. Apparently you get your birthday off as a holiday. Neat idea, but it probably won't make up for losing the fourth week of vacation I'll get after my 5 year seniority date passes in October. And I like the people here. And I doubt I'd have anywhere near the sort of creative freedom I have at my job now. Although I do wonder if "competitive salary" means competitive for K-W or competitive for McAfee's home town of Santa Clara, CA. 'Cuz that's a pretty big difference.

Besides the salary thing, my only real pause comes from the synchronicity of it all. Coincidences have that subtle, nuanced atmosphere of Fate around them. Even if a job change isn't a particularly good idea for me professionally right now, it might be good socially. 'Cuz gods know I could use a kick in the pants in that department. Hm.

For now, though, I think I'll just reply and thank him for his consideration. And ply him to find out what that old virus scanner company is doing in town. I'm still pretty curious about that.
