Edmonton and Toronto

I did eventually meet up with Dave. We had a nice lunch and he took me on a mini-tour of UBC campus. That was pretty cool. I got to see Nitobe Gardens. He was going to show me the nude beach, but we didn't really have the time.

We got into Edmonton the next day and checked into the hostel. Probably the second-best hostel after Vancouver, but doubly nice since it was mostly vacant. I did laundry. While my clothes were drying, we met up with an old friend of Kyle's and then went out to a coffee shop to chat for a bit. That was nice.

Next day was spent entirely in West Edmonton Mall. The biggest mall in North America. Or the world or something. It's part amusement park and part mall. The mall bit wasn't incredibly impressive, unfortunately. Good food courts, but it was decidedly lacking in stuff I'm interested in. Although... they did have a Compucenter. Dying breed, those.

Somewhere on the way to Edmonton, I'd developed a bit of a cold. Not a bad cold, but enough to be annoying. I went into London Drugs to stock up on supplies, foolish believing that London Drugs is a drugstore. It's not. It's a miniature Walmart. They sell furniture. I was stuck in line behind this woman buying a chest of drawers with gift certificates. I just wanted to blow my nose. I figure it's rude to do that before you've paid for the kleenex.

Oh yes, everybody else went on the roller coaster and Alex and Eric went bungee jumping. That's because they're crazy. I stayed on solid ground. To top off our day at West Ed, we went to see a movie. Eric and Alex went to see Kill Bill 2 because it's awesome. Kyle and I went to see Van Helsing because... well, we hadn't seen it before. I'm not saying it was bad. I'm just not saying it was good, that's all.

The next day, we started our 48 hour trip back to Toronto.

It started snowing in Manitoba. That was pretty cool. There was a couple inches on the ground when we got into Winnipeg for lunch. One guy on the train was desperately trying to convince a duo of Japanese and Australian tourists that a May snowstorm in Wiinnipeg was an incredibly rare, freak occurrence. I think he was lying.

I managed to impress myself with my stamina on this trip, but I think 48 hours on a train was a little bit too much for me. I got headachy and nauseous before getting to sleep the last night, and, while that thankfully didn't last long, I didn't sleep well that night. I ended up counting the hours going through Northern Ontario. Hours don't go by nearly as fast when you do that.

We got into Toronto an hour late and spent the night in limbo. Rin was an exemplary hostess and I slept better than I had in weeks. We got up early and got to the train and now I'm in Belleville.

I just got a message from a guy at work and apparently the patch we were working on didn't work out very well. So I'm resisting the urge to jump on the VPN and find out what's going on. I'm still on vacation. If it's waited this long, it can wait till Monday, I'm sure.

Hey, glad to hear you had a good time regardless of the lack of sleep, the cold and the head aches.
That sort of trip is something that I think everyone should do, regardless of the country they're in.
See your world, then see the world.

You passed up the chance at a roller coaster? You grieve me, Squirrel...

So ok, I've been to Victoria, very cool little town with awesome hanging baskets, some funky bars, plus I won a car while I was there. Great trip, from the bits I can recall. But, unlike you, I've never been to Vancouver. Except I'll be there for three days next week. Only this time the agenda doesn't include bars or cars, we just want to find the Canucks' rink (we've been to a game in the Shark Tank, but Jr. was too young to remember it) and some really great hockey gear shops, in between our tournament games. After all, roller hockey starts in a few weeks and Jr. still needs pants and a girdle, plus some of the boys on her current ice hockey team have this really cool floor mat they got at Canadian Tire and so now that is on our *must have* list, too. Oh, and gold stick tape. I just remembered we ran out in February and I never got around to buying more over the internet (we got the original supply in Penticton--lousy sports shops but great hockey school and beaches). And a Flames game puck, with the 3rd jersey logo. I don't suppose you happened to notice where the best hockey shops were, did you, Squirrel? *Sigh*

But most of all, I want to know about the polar bear. You *did* see one in Winnipeg, didn't you? Hurry up and post the picture, dear, I can bear-ly wait to see it. (Or was it hiding in the snow and you missed it?) lol!

Of course I saw a polar bear in Winnipeg! I was able to get pretty close, too. Poor seal.

I've been on a roller coaster once and hated it. It was mostly just uncomfortable and annoying and I was happy when it was over. So I'm at a loss to see why I'd do it again, honestly. I've never liked the whole acceleration thing (unless I'm in control, I guess). *shrug*

Yeah, if you really wanted a ride where you get tossed around impossible angles and kinda feel sick afterwards, you'd get into a relationship.

And hey... what's up with Airline food? I mean, come on!
