vancouver and victoriaThe Vancouver hostel is considerably nicer than the one in Jasper. We've got our own private bathroom with shower and there's three LAN cables in the common room to hook up the laptop. It's not WiFi, but it gets the job done. (I've found lots wandering the streets around here, but there isn't any open WiFi available from the hostel room. Just a faint, WEP-encrypted hotspot called "rferg88." Not helpful). Day before yesterday, the train got in late and we just wandered around Stanley Park and the aquarium for most of the afternoon. There was some talk about going out and experiencing some of Vancouver's night life, but when it came right down to it, we pretty much decided to stay in. That's ended up meaning going to bed early. I think we were all still pretty wiped out. The train was stopped on the tracks for something like two hours in the middle of the BC interior last night. I can sleep fairly well (if uncomfortably) when the train is moving; I can't sleep at all when it's stopped. Staying in is probably a good idea. Yesterday, we took the ferry over to Victoria, checked into the hostel there and walked the streets for a bit. Victoria's a fabulous city. A little touristy, but still really nice. After stopping by the grocery store and picking up some food for supper, we went out to a bar called Darcy's Pub. Because we had to, really. Back in Vancouver today. The ferry back and forth, buses included, takes about 5 hours each way. I would have thought it would be a tiny bit easier than that. Well, I think it was probably worth seeing Victoria, if briefly. The gas price in Vancouver today was 97.5 cents per litre. We all thought that was pretty impressive. We made arrangements to meet up with Dave at a show on Granville Island. Here is when I realized it might have been a mistake not to get that mobile phone after all. When I was talking to Dave on the phone before we left for Victoria, I mentioned that we were talking about seeing a one man Lord of the Rings send-up. As is to be expected, however, plans changed, and we decided to go see an improv thing instead (It was actually pretty good... up there with Second City, anyway...). I phoned and left a message telling him what we were seeing and where to see him. Since I have intermittant Internet access and he may not be by his phone, this was the best we could do. We got there a half-hour early to make sure everybody made it and everything. But Dave wasn't there. The show started and still no Dave. It turned out Dave went to the wrong theatre. And waited around till the end of the show. And I never showed up. Which sucks horribly. So I'm going to see if I can make it up to him. I'm going to try to meet up for lunch tomorrow. comments:
