slipperyI wasn't expecting to spend fifteen minutes this morning scraping ice off the car. I also wasn't expecting to end up in the ditch. I was coming up on the corner of Bearinger and Albert when I hit a patch of ice. Actually, the whole road was pretty much ice, but that's where I started sliding. Normally this wouldn't bother me so much, except that there was a car in front of me. Not that close, but I'm a bit paranoid about these things. I don't like hitting other cars. You have to get out and exchange phone numbers and insurance information and all sorts of other things I don't want to do when I'm just trying to go to work. So I headed for the curb instead. This tactic worked brilliantly. Except that I ended up stuck, perpendicular to the road. I didn't feel too bad. There was a taxi being hauled off the curb by a big tow truck the other side of Albert. I figured my predicament was at least fixable with a little bit of pushing. Note to self, though: put car shovel back in car. It's not much use in storage. I got out and started pushing. Almost immediately a passerby offered to help. We still weren't making much progress. Straighten out the wheels, rock the car, still stuck. An old Ukranian (or something... I'm not that good with Eastern European accents) guy pulled up in his car and got out. I got in the car and eased in reverse a bit. Still stuck. It wasn't until he got his shovel out and started digging snow out from under the bumper that we actually made any progress. I waved thanks to my saviours as I drove away. It didn't really seem adequate. comments:
