miscellany

The guy who does VG Cats was in front of me in the get-Piro-to-sign-stuff line at CNAnime. Since then, I figured I'd read it. Just so I'd be able to point to it every once in a while and tell this story. I tells ya, sometimes that strip is comic genius. Sometimes... I really don't know what to say.

My web server's down and I'm sad. It's down because I took it down and wiped the harddrive, so, like, I can't exactly ask for sympathy. I'm sad because I was all set to install FreeBSD on it, which seemed like a good idea. I liked OpenBSD, but it was more than a little slow on that crappy old Pentium 133 and I was having Samba problems. I figured FreeBSD, being more widespread and optimized for x86, would solve both those problems.

And it might, except that I hate it. The installer crashed and, after that, half the packages I've tried to install give me some sort of error. And ports, the supposed preferred alternative to packages, have to be built. On a P133. Which takes forever. I can't get X working at all. Basically, it's pissing me off.

I'm contemplating alternatives. I could go back to Linux. I think I might, for now, anyway. I don't really like Linux. I'm also thinking it might be time to retire the old P133. So maybe I'll start messing around with my early-graduation-present-for-myself computer that's in the living room very occasionally acting as a region 2 DVD player slash subtitler. I don't really need it for that, since I've got anothe computer that can do that job well enough. It was intended to be a Linux machine anyway, not that it has had Linux on it for more than a month at a time. That and Linus (the bastard) broke the kernel so it gives errors on those processors. Maybe it will have better luck running OpenBSD. Hm...

Not that anybody cares, of course. I just thought I'd share.
