the faireAnother year, another Royal Medieval Faire. I actually got to see a bit of the show this year. It's pretty silly, actually. Oh well. I know the actors enjoy themselves. And the kids like it. So that's all good. I got there bright and early and was helping to man one of the gates for the first hour or two. Ann Marie—the person who's suckered me into this every year—said they were desperate for volunteers. When I sent the email in, the volunteer co-ordinator's reply exuded gratitude. When I got there to do that job, I could barely move for the veritalbe sea of volunteers manning that gate. There were a good fifteen people there besides me. I was supposed to be putting wristbands on, but after a while, I figured out that the other 7 people putting wristbands on people could do just as well, if not better, without me. I guess my boredom was showing because I was eventually shipped off to the rock-climbing wall to help get kids out of rock-climbing harnesses. That wasn't a bad gig, except for the fear that I might end up pulling some kid's pants down. I think that would be frowned upon. Thankfully, it didn't happen. I ended up with a sunburn on half my face. It looks quite lovely. I wasn't expecting to sit in one position in full sun for two or three hours. I'd've been more prepared otherwise. I didn't stick around for take-down, as much as Ann Marie wanted me to. She'd wandered off somewhere anyway, so guilt wasn't working. I ended up buying lots of food (including my favourite: savoury meat pies), fudge, a little stuffed rat thing from the Faire's fundraising booth (it's probably meant to be a cat's toy, but it was the cutest thing there), and a stained glass fairy from Amy—a CTRL-A person with a booth there. The vendors were a bit disappointing this year. Well, really, it's usually just one vendor I buy stuff from: a neat woodworking guy who does games and things. This year (if it was the same person), he looked like he'd gotten heavily into lathes and was mostly selling "wands." Cute, but not my thing. I think I'm going to skip the volunteer party thing tomorrow in favour of a mini CTRL-A show. That party just ends up making me feel uncomfortable anyway. They're fun people and everything, but I'm just no good with parties. comments:This post is archived. Comments are disabled. Feel free to send me email if you have something to say. | |
