stickers!

I wonder if I still have my sticker collection somewhere...

I had some of the same scratch and sniff ones.

incest! volcanos! turkey basters!

Oh man. I've been tracking this story for a while in the Record, and they've finally reached a verdict. Every day it just got weirder and weirder. In a way, I'm kinda sad to see it finish.

pom poko and yamadas out this week

Disney's releasing Pom Poko and My Neighbours the Yamadas on DVD this week.

I bought the Japanese R2 releases of both of these Isao Takahata movies explicity because I figured Disney would never release them. Or at least not for a very long time.

Pom Poko especially, due to the fintastical tanuki scrotal manipulation. Roger Ebert figured similarly. I think it's fantastic it's been released. It's a very good movie, and I'm sure kids'd love it.

I didn't think Yamadas would come out, just because it's not very accessible to a general (non-Japanese) audience. It's nice and fun and nostalgic, but it's not our nostalgia. I'm glad it's out, though. I like it, although I'd have a hard time recommending it to people...

disney finally gives up on 2d animation

A long time in the making, but Disney finally shut down the last of its 2D animation studios.

On the one hand, this is kinda sad. On the other, they hadn't produced anything worthwhile in quite some time. So I don't feel like we're really losing anything.

This doesn't mean hand-drawn animation is dead, of course. There are a now a lot of creative young animators out there who have been cut loose from corporate strictures. Of course, most of them will go work at Walmart or McDonalds, but one or two might get it in their heads to actually create something amazing.

itunes japan

Cool. Buying legit anime soundtracks just got a lot easier (and cheaper too).

(Shame about the DRM, though... I'll have to stock up and crack it all while Canada still lacks anti-circumvention laws).

sexy voice and robo

Wow. This sounds... awesome!

From the AoD blog...

Sexy Voice and Robo
You all need to buy this. A 14 year old phone-dating operator has dreams to be a spy, or a fortune-teller. With her skills learned from the phone-dating service, she becomes quite the good profiler and ends up taking unofficial investigative jobs from a sort of yakuza boss. Oh, and she drags along her sidekick Robo, an older, lonely robot otaku looking for that one girl that will rock his world. A story about growing up and understanding the harsh realities behind those dreams. Wonderful stuff and great brush stroke artwork.
