video games make me popular

Gran Tourismo 3 isn't going well, I'm afraid. My poor little Trueno still too underpowered for me to win any more races, but too powerful for the lame "sports" tires to hold to the road. And for some stupid reason, real soft racing tires cost about as much as I'd pay for a (marginally) better car.

Gran Tourismo also has questionable physics when it comes to things like collisions. For instance, when I'm drifting through a turn, the slightest nudge from another car sends me spinning out of control. The best I can do to any other car, however, is maybe nudge them into a wall, if I'm lucky. If I'm unlucky, I just spin off myself. (Yes, one of my favourite tactics in car racing games is running people off the road. It's just so much more fun. GT3 refuses to let me do this, however. :`( ). My main problem is that, after doing so well during my all-nighter, I forgot how to drive after my 18 hour nap.

I still haven't really delved into Havest Moon yet. I'll probably get to that next week sometime. That's when GT3 will have sufficiently frustrated me. It requires more concentration. It really is something to be savoured.

I think I want to get Grand Theft Auto III. Now there is a car game. Why race in circles when you can run over pedestrians and evade police. That's cool!

I'm not sure how GT3 handles collisions, but the same thing used to happen to me in MSR while going through corners (I'd get thrown into a complete 360 spinout). I've found that the best thing to do when a light tap starts to send you out of control is to quickly counter steer and rapidly tap the brake until you begin to go the other way, then turn the opposite way again while braking lightly, and then accelerate as soon as you straiten out. At best, you'll get away almost scottfree. At worst, you'll do two mini drifts and lose a little speed. Just remember not to slam on the breaks or steer too hard when you get tapped/rammed. Most wipe outs are caused by over reactions. (or bad physics models, like you said. But whatever).

Racing games are addicting, aren't they? : )

Hey Squirrel, maybe there's an even *better* toy coming along soon to amuse you. Check this out: http://theitquestion.com/
What do you suppose it is? Hmm....

Ah, marketing...

Well, we found out about 'IT.' 'IT' was even on the CBC morning news this morning. They had a good chuckle about how it was touted as a revolution in personal transportation. And, of course, they had to go all Canadian and ask where the heater was.

Maybe it'll show up in the next GT3...

Canadian? Well, I asked it too! In fact, my first thought was along the lines of, "who'd ride a dumb thing like that except on a perfect weather day?" I'm wondering why the hype, because it really isn't practical at all. It would be difficult to manuever down sidewalks (does it have shocks for bumping over curbs? lol!), dangerous on the actual roadways (drivers being what they are and all), it would expose the rider to full weather conditions (imagine getting caught in a sudden thunderstorm!), and what about hilly cities like San Francisco or Seattle--does it have the power to climb steep grades or features to handle downhill movement safely? I think the whole thing is nuts and--looking at the investors involved--probably more gimmic than "revolutionary". Maybe if they downgrade the price to make it comparable to, say, a bicycle...

Yeah. I could buy a moped for less than $3000, and it would be just as cheap to operate. And mopeds can carry stuff (in the rain, even). Heck, http://www.feelgoodcars.com/ has about the same advertised daily cost, and and can carry *more* stuff (and costs about US$16 000, but anyway...)
