Abslom Daak - Dalek Killer!

About a decade ago, I was bored on a work term in Ottawa, and I put together a fan website for an obscure Doctor Who spin-off character. Abslom Daak was a cheesy 80s comic anti-hero that was created for Doctor Who magazine by Steve Moore (who was an influence on Alan Moore--no relation) and Steve Dillon (who later co-created Preacher which is supposed to be really good, but I never got around to reading it).

I thought the Abslom Daak strips were a lot of fun, and I had the trade paperback compilation they put out in the early 90s. Which meant I had pretty much all the material on the character that was in existance, so I was well-positioned to create the ultimate Abslom Daak fan site. And there was nothing on him on the Internet at the time. Which wasn’t that suprising, really. There wasn’t even all that much on the Daleks online at the time. Creating the ultimate Dalek fan site, on the other hand, was a pretty daunting task. There’s just too much. Abslom Daak I could do in a weekend.

People did fan sites back then, you see. That sort of thing doesn’t really happen anymore. And it was pretty awesome, too. I’d get email from all over. (People did email back then too). I got email from one of the artists of the comic, a former Doctor Who Magazine editor, and some guy who wanted pictures of cybermen for the cyber-vicar costume he was doing for a fancy dress party.

The site’s languished a bit in the last 8 or so years. That’s okay. Besides the new series lifting a few lines from his comic strips, not a lot has been going on with Daak lately (I’m still kicking myself for not asking Rob Shearman whether that was intentional). I’d still like to get a Dalek Killer GURPS game off the ground and post some character templates and things, but ultimately I’m not very motivated.

What brought on these reminiscences is the fact that some crazy fans have gone off and animated the original comic serial. The guy emailed me yesterday. That is, of course, awesome, and I’m going to have to get a copy. If it’s any good at all, I might have to force people to watch it. XD

I stumbled upon this little site while I was searching Google for something random. I just thought that I would let you know that I was here and that, though I can't really follow your posts, they seem to reflect a reasonable person. Good luck and happy htmling.
