MiceOn the front page of the Record last week was the story of 4000 mice that had been handed over to the K-W Humane Society. I made a donation, because I can, and because these are well-meaning local folks in a bind. The Record wasn't exactly clear, though, on what was going to happen to the mice. Just that they couldn't be adopted unless the woman who was hoarding them signed a release or the legal process had run its course. They were pets, the Record said. All of them. The crazy woman was actually looking after them. 4000 mice in one house, though, is an obvious public health and safety issue. I suppose it wasn't much of a surprise when I found out that the mice were going to be euthenized. I mean, what do you do with 4000 mice? Even if they could put them out for adoption, how many do you think would reasonably find home for? As much as I like small, furry things, I don't think I'd really want to keep a mouse as a pet. They could probably give a lot of them away to feed snakes and things, but that's not very nice. And it turns out they weren't about to do that anyway. Melle.ca is a local blogger who's made her way onto my daily reading (or at least checking) list. She works (part time? volunteers? I don't know) at the KW Humane Society. And she's written a sad and moving piece about the mice, which I think is worth reading. comments:This post is archived. Comments are disabled.
