music by numbers

Ah, GarageBand is cool.

tinkering.mp3, my first GarageBand composition.

I did this in about an hour, after I gave up trying to coax my rusty piano skills into producing anything half-decent. This is just pasted together with the available samples. I used to do things like this in OctaMED back on the Amiga. Although the samples I was using then weren't nearly as nice.

The one thing I really like about GarageBand is now my circa 1982 electric piano sounds a whole lot nicer plugged into the laptop with the Grand Piano instrument sample set. And some of the guitars and organs are neat too. It's great for noodling around.

Maybe I'll spend some more time coming up with something that's more my own.

Even though the file was nice to listen to I have to question why? Now I can see learning the software and creating music as admirable goals I just hope that this will only cut into your video game time since I don't think you really needed to add another activity that you do alone. Of course, you could have changed your other goal, which is always acceptable (I've been told flexibilty is the key to success) and then GarageBand would be completely compatible.

Why? Why not?

I messed around with computer music stuff back in highschool. It's kind of fun, even though I don't tend to really go anywhere with it. I built a MIDI interface for the Amiga, although I only used it a couple of times, since it's a pain to get the piano and a computer, monitor, etc. together in the same room. It's not a small piano. I've had the urge again for a few months.

Apple did a GarageBand demo thing at the university. That involved actually going out of the house to a place where there might be people. I went and there weren't. But whatever. To avoid making the trip a complete loss, I took the 10% discount and got iLife '04, as has been documented here. I got a USB MIDI interface too, just for kicks. Possibly regretting that I never managed to explore that avenue to any extent in highschool. Plugged it in and messed around. I might do more ambiant techno kinds of things. Because they don't take a whole lot of skill beyond an ear for what sounds nice.

For the record, I haven't done any gaming in the last two weeks or more. I got stuck on the end boss in KOTOR and lost interest. Even if I had, I wouldn't apologize for it. If I had something to do that involved leaving the house, I would. I don't. I'm looking for ideas, although you'll have to forgive me if I don't take them up.

Writers' workshops, for example, could be interesting. And thanks for the suggestion. The problem is I'm not a writer. By virtue of the fact that I don't write (the exception being this journal). So I'd just be going there to meet people. So I'd feel like I had no real business being there. So I'd have no confidence. So it just wouldn't go anywhere. I can't keep up that sort of pretense.

My mother occasionally suggests I go to church to get hooked up with somebody. Leaving aside the fact that churches aren't the babefests they once were, I won't do that for roughly the same reason.

And honestly, I'm not that single-minded. About anything, really. Maybe that's part of the problem.

The music thing is great but the point is that it is something you do by yourself.

If you're not a writer than why are you trying to write a book? Aren't workshops for people who need help building their interests?

Maybe there are some homebuyer workshops or workshops for home maintenance around. Those are a couple of things that you should definitely get into if your serious about home ownership.

Here's something else you could check into...

Dude, that is great! It reminds me of all the time that I invested into learning how to use MacMod Pro a long time ago, but then I never really did much with it. Learning to use it was fun though.

grrr!

That was the politest way I could think of for you pointing out my total lack of musical talent...

"about an hour"

"rusty piano skills"

grrr!

Seriously, go for it. If you enjoy it (whether you do it alone or not) that's all that matters.

{Besides, put some stuff out, and then wait for the groupies to show up! :-) Mind Yoko, but overall... chicks dig music, right?}

I'm going to go sulk... when I get time and money, I've always fancied I'd learn to play something -- even if it ends up being the kazoo. :-)

(Oh, by the way, the gaming stuff I got is pretty cool! I like the background in the Traveller stuff, and I'm hoping that Tri-Stat dX ($15 CDN) will provide a clean chat friendly gaming environment... I'll keep you posted.)

Anyhow, do more tunes!
(I, as a duly self-appointed member of the fs fan club, hereby public demand more! Well... okay, I'll just ask nicely and see what happens... )

Honest, that thing is just a couple guitar samples, two drum loops, 4 piano clips using an electric piano intstrument and a couple effects. Most of the work was copy and paste. No instrumentation involved at all. The piano was unplugged. You could even do better, I'm sure.

I heard an encore. Unlike the first, this one actually involves me at the piano. Of course, the piano is pretending to be a flute. Because it's easier to play with one hand. And I've got a flute solo book.

Country Garden remix.

I think it's cheesy as hell. But I also think cheesy is what GarageBand does best. So I'm happy.
