catching up

I went back to Belleville for the weekend. It was nice, but a little sombre. The father of a friend of my sister died in the hospital on Friday. He was also a friend of my parents. I'm sure I've met him once or twice, but I don't really know him. My parents were making plans to go to the visitation and my sister coming back from Ottawa when I left on Sunday.

My mom also found out this week that her sister's cancer has come back. She hasn't had the best of weeks. Apparently some strange doctor came to my aunt's room and told her there wasn't any hope and all they can do is make her comfortable. Except that her real doctor is still optimistic and is putting her back on chemo. Strange.

I got to hang out with Matt a bit, which was fun. And on Sunday, I met up with John and Morag and Jenning and Andrew in Mississauga for Ghost in the Shell: Innocence.

You know, I like Mamoru Oshii and everything, but he seems to be getting really self-indulgent. (The basset hound he inserts into his movies, he says, is himself--his soul. Karl mentioned yesterday the birds he always put in represent God. I figured it was probably something like that. They're always showing up when something Deep And Meaningful is happening. I think he needs to expand his repertoire). Cool movie, though. Very pretty. I wasn't disappointed. I am glad I've seen a bit of the TV series so I have a better grasp of what's going on. All the rampant Symbolism makes it hard to pick out the basics. The TV series rocks.

I had a bit of trouble getting the harddrives working in my server. I've always had problems adding harddrives to this thing, and I always assumed the IDE controller was a bit flaky. Turns out I was wrong. My problem is the power supply isn't powerful enough.

I've been scrounging around the surplus PCs here at work, but they don't have anything higher than 250W. I don't like putting too much money into my server, because I figure it's less than a year away from being replaced in some form or other (harddrives are an excpetion, since they're readily moved around). Solution: get a silent power supply for my main desktop machine and give its 320W PSU to the server. This strikes me as an excellent idea. The power supply fan is currently the noisiest thing on that machine (although it's not nearly as bad as the old CPU fan was).

So now I get to shop around for a silent power supply. Glee! I'm seriously considering the ginormously fanned "Super Tornado," which I'm assuming is considerably less loud than the name implies. I wouldn't mind considering a fanless PSU, but I'm not seeing one at any of my usual places.
