it's over!
We finally (finally!!) release the thing I've been working on for the last—God—three months. That sounds shorter than it feels. It was supposed to be a quick patch thing, but it just never ended. Until now. It's over. I can go onto the next thing. Well, except for the bugs that got deferred to the next patch and release.
I came into work at 9 last night for an hour just to make sure a last minute bug was deferrable. And it was, so I went home and watched the rest of Invader Zim. That made me happy again.
I demoed it to a potential customer today. He was really nice about the whole thing, even though I managed to mess up the one complicated part of the demo. That's lack of preparation for you. He didn't seem to notice, so it was all good. It sounded like the guy were were demoing to was already sold. He just had to convince other people to go with us.
As a small follow-up, I've pretty much settled on getting the Tungsten W through Rogers. I think I've managed to answer all my questions (no thanks to Rogers' support people, obviously). I don't relish paying another $35/month, but this could be cool. I ran into a friend and former coworker at RIM who said I could get one of the old monochrome blackberry phones for $300, but I'm not seeing that on websites. Oh well. Colour is a nice thing to have anyway.

Um, now that we have such a keen inside view of the software development industry, does this mean we have to have sympathy for Microsoft?
Just asking.
About this 'phone thing--this is a wireless connection? And there is also some computing ability, via built in memory and OS? Does this mean it could be vulnerable to contracting a virus by making an accidental remote connection to a sick machine?
Let me know when your brainwaves start altering--I want a full report. 'Course, maybe it's better than getting drunk, which would explain why so many people have become addicted to their cell 'phones...

Honestly, I don't think Microsoft would ever have one of their developers demoing a produce over the phone just to make a ~$50,000 deal. I don't have a whole lot of sympathy, but you can if you like.
Microsoft just announced a product that directly competes against ours. I've been reading lots of Microsoftie blogs and watching demo videos, trying to get into their head. But "sympathy" isn't the right word. :P
Would I notice if my brain waves started altering? I'll let you know if I do. I still hate phones, so I don't think I'll have this thing up against my head very much. Around Waterloo, though, there are a lot of people standing around typing stuff with their thumbs. So addiction can occur. I'll try to restrain myself.

Going vegan on us? lol!
Better than watching the 'Soft demos, you should read user boards. Then you'll know what features the customers hate (or find useless), and what they like except they'd prefer to have work differently. That's what *I* would do, anyway...

I don't get a whole lot of say in what happens in the core product, to be honest. I mostly work in integrations between our product and Microsoft products (namely Visual Studio).
Given that the Microsoft offering is still vapourware, the reviews have been pretty glowing. Nobody's actually used it yet, so they haven't had the chance to get annoyed with it.
