vacation summaryMy extra-long weekend's pretty much over. Back to work tomorrow for a nice little two-day week. And the dentist tomorrow. Joy. I'm not really any closer to finding a purpose in life, but I am a bit more centered. I'd let work get to me, and having a bit of a break from it was welcome. I like to think I'm pretty good at handling stress, but it will sometimes accumulate without my noticing. Worse, things at work (and elsewhere) have been playing at my insecurities. And then there are all the weird dreams lately. I think I'm going to have to work a little harder to keep things on an even keel for the next little while. I'm in a better position to do that now. I drove out to Stratford today. There's this lovely little bookstore there that has just about every graphic novel currently in print sitting there on the shelves. I think they intended to be a comic shop, but being on the main strip in a touristy town forced them to evolve a respectable bookshop, complete with big, glossy coffee table books and a respectable Can. Lit. section on the front end. The graphic novels are in the back, along with role playing games, a table of comic book boxes and a fairly decent sci-fi and fantasy section. They've even got paint and miniatures in a glass case by the cash register, bless them. I bought vol.3 of Kare Kano, which doesn't seem to be available in town. I should make a point of getting out there more often. Yesterday was Canada Day and John and I went to see the fireworks. We met up with Liz, as I knew we would, and that was all good. I didn't do much otherwise yesterday. I just puttered around, cleaning up the living room and listening to a couple more Doctor Who episodes. Jubilee and The Church and the Crown are easily the best of the bunch so far for this shipment. The Church and the Crown is a light, fun little historical, where Jubilee is about the opposite of "light and fun." These audio things get awfully post-modern sometimes, and Jubilee certainly falls in that category. It's one of their better attempts, though. People are still setting off fireworks outside somewhere. Really! Children. Hrmph. I'm really enjoying The Moving Toyshop. It's terribly silly. To illustrate what I mean, a young Mr Hoskins is always seen giving boxes of chocolates to young women:
