NNnnnoooooo~~~!!!
Should I do a Star Wars review thing? Will Tink get mad at me?
I don\'t think it\'s awful. I thought it was pretty okay. Of course, that\'s a bit of a disappointment. Star Wars is supposed to be better than okay. At least it didn\'t suck.
The most disappointing thing about the whole prequel trilogy is the lost potential, I think. It could have been breathtakingly awesome. It could have justified people writing \"Jedi\" down under religion in the UK census. It could have said something about the human condition and the nature of good and evil. Or, failing that, it could have been a good descent into darkness story, turning into a decent redemption story. It didn\'t do any of those things.
That stuff, I admit, is really hard. I would have settled for what (I think) the original Star Wars movie set out to be--a rennaissance of the old 50s sci-fi serials, with lots of action and good guys and bad guys and a limitless world of adventure and imagination. I mean... I really liked the Clone Wars animated series.
That\'s the other thing that bothers me about the prequel trilogy. George, for some reason, set out to make his Star Wars universe a lot smaller. Why does he feel he has to tie up all the little loose ends? Why does it have to be Chewbacca? And what does it say about Chewbacca where after his small display of courage and commitment to the forces of good, he goes off to become navigator and part-time thug for a small-time smuggler. What purpose does Threepio serve in these movies?
It\'s kind of sad that these movies don\'t expand on the nature of the Force (except to force it into a pseudo-sci-fi technobabble explanation). They don\'t say much of anything about Good or Evil or love or betrayal. It\'s just a bunch of stuff that happens. It could have been more. I wanted it to be more.
I don\'t begrudge spending the money to see it. But I can\'t help but hope that after George finally goes off to stand beside Anikin and Obi Wan and Yoda, somebody will come along to remake Star Wars in such a way that it lives up to a little of its potential. Because underneath all the cruft and glitz and bad acting, there\'s a really, really good story down there. It\'s an unlikely dream, but I\'m entitled to hope.
